Bunny, Bunny
Fluffy bunny. Cuddle bunny. Bun bun. Cute nicknames and diminutives of the animal “rabbit” as a paragon of innocence, sweetness, and youth.
Playboy bunny. Bunny girl. Rope bunny. Sexual nicknames as a paragon of youthful sensuality, sex, and lust.
How have these two incredibly dichotomous definitions of one creature come to pass in popular culture today? How does the sexualized female figure play into stereotypical innocent tropes? What does it mean to obscure one’s identity and face while leaving their body to be visually consumed? Who benefits from being behind the camera versus in front, and is it possible for the model to reclaim their agency?
As the artist who crafts the masks by hand, sets up the camera on a self-timer, and serves as my own model I have complete control over my image. Façade plays into the dualistic standards and obfuscations of a “bunny” while subverting genre conventions and claiming ownership over my body.
