Synesthesia
What is “synesthesia”? Synesthesia is a cross-wiring in the brain found in 4% of the population which causes the senses to react with each other in unexpected ways by combining reactions, like tasting sounds or smelling words. For this project, I focused on chromesthesia. Chromesthesia is a type of synesthesia which allows the individual to involuntarily see colors in music or sound. I used my photographs and layer blending to replicate the typical morphing of colors into tangible pieces of art. I also took the lyrics and general tone of the song into account so it stayed within the bounds of the original meaning. For this project, I contacted many synesthetes (people who experience synesthesia) to tell me about their experiences so I can tell bits of their stories through my art. Please enjoy the many curves and twists of this collection.
Captioned below each image you will find a Youtube video with each song at a designated start time. There is also a Spotify playlist linked below with the full discography of the project. Each image is titled with its inspired song name. Please listen to the song until the chorus, or skip to that point for the full experience. Please scroll for the thumbnails of the images which you can click through to see it formatted as a fit for your browser.
